Casas Caiadas

Although we like to travel abroad, increasingly we are sure that we’ve the luck to live in one of the most beautiful countries in Europe and places like Casas Caiadas are proof of this. Just over an hour's trip from Lisbon, this small 'village' located in the middle of a large estate near Sabugueiro, Arraiolos, is the fruit of the reconstruction work of more than three years of Paula and Mário Domingues. Having recovered three separate houses, which were part of a core of old water mills, the couple opened Casas Caiadas in order to share this beautiful piece of Alentejo surrounded by olive trees, megalithic rocks and a small stream full of animal life .
With the help of architect Luís Pereira Miguel, Paula and Mário managed to restore dignity to this set of abandoned structures, creating one of the best places to relax in Alentejo, meanwhile candidate to Vilalva Award by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Composed of three buildings, Casas Caiadas are ideal to enjoy with family or a group of friends, because all the 'village' is reserved as a whole. While the old straw warehouse was turned into a appealing suite with stone walls and blue-green shutters, the largest house has two bedrooms and one suite. To complete the set, the old mill is now used as a common space, the most social area of Casas Caiadas, where the living room and kitchen are installed. However it’s outside that is one of the most appealing aspects of this well-kept secret, the circular beach-like swimming pool, perfect for cooling off during the day or at night to observe the starry sky.

We’ve visited Casas Caiadas with our family recently and we realized the passion of Paula and Mário for the project and their impeccable taste, which crosses the respect for history, simplicity, natural materials and little touches of modernity that make all the difference. A must visit!
