Best of Portugal: Architecture

Inspired by the Spanish Tourist Office initiative developed with Monocle magazine in the last months and motivated by the lack of promotion of the best brands and places by the Portuguese Tourist Office, O Editorial will publish in the following weeks 50 of its favourite things in Portugal, from architecture and design to culture and style.

In the fifth part of Best of Portugal series, the focus will be on architecture, from photography and prefabs to the best studios:

Modular System - Together with Treehouse, Modular System proves that portuguese prefab houses are some of the best internationally, pairing good design, functionality and modularity. Being a project of studio Arquiporto, the best examples of the system are the building of former restaurant Buhle, in Porto, and the Eco Suites Resort in Santiago do Cacém.

Architecture Triennale - With the aim of "researching and promoting architecture", Lisbon Trienalle has an important role in publicize this discipline to new publics. In the third edition (from 12th of September to 15th of December 2012), under the theme 'Close, Closer', the Triennale presents three exhibitions, digital publications and Lisbon Open House, in which 50 spaces were open to the general public, like the ETAR in Alcântara (in the image).

Promontório - Founded in 1990, the lisboan studio is known for its holistic approach to architecture, with special focus on durability, sustainability and superb use of materials. With projects in the four corners of the world, from museums and hotels to housing and schools, L'And Vineyards Resort (in the image) and Mora River Aquarium are my favourites.

Fernando Guerra - Talking about architecture in Portugal and not mentioning the work of Fernando Guerra wouldn't be fair. Photographing some of the best buildings in Portugal and abroad, Fernando Guerra recently won an important prize with an image of a project of Aires Mateus architects (in the image). In his Últimas Reportagens site it's possible to see the updated work of the portuguese photographer.

Carvalho Araújo - Since the visit to this studio near Braga some years ago that i have been fascinated by their work. Approaching every project with the same attitude, regardless the size, Carvalho Araújo design stands out for the simplicity and respect for the surrounding landscape, as can be seen in Atelier de Jardim AS (in the image) and Mário Sequeira Gallery projects.
